MEDICAID SERVICES

For eligible persons, Medicaid will pay the cost of transportation to necessary medical services when transportation is not available within the household.  Barre Hospital Hill transportation servicesPrescription pick-up may also be arranged per approval.

Medicaid transportation is offered and limited to those medical services deemed necessary and approved by the Vermont Office of Health Access.  Transportation to the needed medical services beyond 30 miles from your residence requires prior referral from your primary care physician. Medicaid will not pay for any trips or additional stops beyond the most direct route to the intended medical service.

Medicaid requires that all trips be prior authorized by contacting GMTA directly.  This can be done by calling GMTA directly at 802-223-7287 to speak with an available trip planner who will assist you.  To receive prior authorization, you will be asked to provide Medicaid enrollment information, such as your address, social security number, eligibility status, trip time, date and destination.  All information remains confidential.

Medicaid Transportation Eligibility Requirements:

  • Person requesting trip has Medicaid on the requested trip date
  • Trip requested receives prior authorization through GMTA
  • Trip requested is to the closest available location for needed medical service

For requested trips that meet Medicaid eligibility requirements, GMTA will coordinate and schedule the trip using the most appropriate least cost mode.   This may include placing the trip on an existing public transportation fixed route, using a volunteer driver, or scheduling a taxi of your choice.  Medicaid directs GMTA to arrange each trip using the most suitable and cost effective mode.

We encourage you to contact GMTA several days in advance to schedule your trip.  Our ability to coordinate a trip often depends on the limited availability of volunteer drivers and taxis.  The greater the notice, the better the chance of coordinating your transportation needs to the best of our ability.

We look forward to providing you with the best and most efficient transportation possible.
